1 week without food..

Today marks the 7th day that Bill has gone without eating a single solitary bite of food. He hasn't had anything to drink since Sunday. We visited him after school today, but were only able to spend a few minutes with him before he was knocked out from the meds. The good news is that his digestive tract is showing signs of waking up as he began burping today. On the other hand, this also means that he has become quite nauseated and in much more pain than before. The first round of meds did not stop the nausea so he received another round when we got there and was promptly off to sleep. He has not been able to get much rest because the nurses and doctors are constantly in and out of the room monitoring him, flushing IV's and catheters, etc. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that he is sleeping soundly as I type.

They did decide to do another blood transfusion tonight. It is important to keep monitoring this situation to make sure that he is not losing blood. In addition, the nurses were hooking up a feeding tube as we left this evening. The vitamins and protein should also help him gain some strength back.

Bill's "roommate" was moving out of the other half of the room as we arrived today. He had been there for 16 days following a kidney transplant. It was touching to see the excitement on his wife's face as they were wheeling him out. This change of events was good news for both men. We quickly requested a bed change for Bill so that he could take over the side of the room with the window and recliner. I think having the window will make a huge difference over the next several days!

The next couple of days may be the hardest for Bill, but we are continuing to pray that he keeps his spirits up and is able to eat, drink and go home soon! More to come tomorrow afternoon...
