Maddie turned 12 years old on June 6th. She has had lots of health problems, mainly auto-immune issues during her life, so this was a big day! Since then she had another oral surgery to remove all of her teeth. The ulcers in her mouth were so bad prior to surgery that she couldn't even eat. They covered her lips, gums and tongue. I know how bad it hurts to have one tiny ulcer in my mouth, so I can't even imagine the pain that she was in. The good news is that for the first time in a year she is off her pain meds and is running around like a spring chicken. I know that her mouth is still healing and the ulcers are not gone, but she is already feeling better and tearing up some canned food. She had stopped getting up to go for walks over the last year, but every day this week she has met me at the door with the other three to patrol the neighborhood. I am so happy to have the old Maddie back!
On another positive note, Holly is now going to the vet 2-3 times a week for blood checks and her numbers are slowly climbing. Dr. L wouldn't say she is out of the woods yet, but things are looking better and she's starting to act like herself again. She will need monitoring and will need to stay on medication for 6 months to a year to prevent a relapse. We will continue to pray that this will all be behind us soon!
