Holly was apparently stung by a bee or other insect earlier in the week and had to go to the vet for a severe allergic reaction. She seemed to improve, but then two days later she became much more ill. After spending all day Friday at the vet, they determined that she was having an auto immune reation, probably AIHA. Her red blood cells were being destroyed quickly. This could have been caused by a tick bite or something else.... She was put on three different medications and sent home for around the clock monitoring since it was the weekend.
After coming home from the vet, Holly continued to get worse; vomiting, pale gums, very lethargic. My parents took her to the ER vet last night where they were then rushed to another ER vet in Charlottesville for a blood transfusion. Her plasma levels had decreased in half over the last 24 hours. The latest diagnosis is AMHA. She is still at this vet this morning. The transfusion went well and her gums are starting to pink up a little. However, she is not out of the woods. There is a 50% chance that she will pull through this devastating disease. They may have to do another transfusion and are going to start an aggressive therapy, possibly chemo. My parents are going back to visit her in a little bit. We checked on Gracie last night while they were gone. She doesn't know what to do without her sister! Please keep them and Holly in your prayers!
