Track started up two weeks ago, and since then I've been running five days a week because my Sports Conditioning program is Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings and track is on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Apparently it is doing my body some good because on Friday we had the 2nd Annual Hornet Hustle to raise money for additional solar panels for our school. Leslie and I were the only two teachers to run the 1.5 mile cross-country trail. We ran the 1-mile split in 7 minutes 35 seconds and ended the race in 11 min. 25 seconds. Our original goal was just to do the mile in under 10 minutes, but I knew we could do it in under 8 minutes. If we had actually pushed ourselves and started out with the "fast" group of kiddos, instead of the back of the pack, I think we would have done the mile in about 6:40, which is what I used to run in middle school.
I think I'll take the track kids on this route as our warm up on Tuesday and time myself now that I have a better idea of where I stand. This year our track team is the best group of kids we've had in years. They can all pretty much keep up on the long distance runs that I take them on, and for the most part they aren't complainers:) We have a our one and only middle school meet at Walton in a couple of weeks, and I hope we have a good showing. I know we will have quite a few that make it to State's after the Hershey's meet.
And in case I haven't mentioned it before, I really do prefer working with kids in this setting, rather than the classroom. Maybe I'll take some of those classes that I need to get my P.E. degree this fall??
