Roonie's Attack

I got up early this morning so that I could get a lot done before we were supposed to leave for Landon's birthday party and a cookout at Bill and Carol's house. My morning routine of feeding and walking the dogs was going along as usual, that is until I got to the circle at my Mom and Dad's house.

A new couple moved in two weeks ago and installed an invisible fence. Rich and I stopped on our walk last weekend and they told us that they had one big dog and one old little dog that would probably bark at us, but were harmless.

Well, this morning they were anything but harmless! As I rounded the circle, the big dog ran out barking, but stopped at the end of the driveway. Two seconds later, the old dog didn't even check up as she crossed the driveway line and ran up on us barking and biting at Dixie, Maddie and Tank. I was trying to get her away and keep my dogs from getting tangled up when her sidekick, Memphis the Golden Retriever, charged us and grabbed Tank's back. At this point, the owner who was already outside, was making his way across the street to get his dogs back in the yard. As I was yelling and trying to get Tank away, I slipped on the wet grass and went straight down. I guess I should be thankful it was the grass and not the asphalt. No sooner than I got up, everything was over and the owner was apologizing and asking if anyone got hurt. That is when I saw Roonie sitting behind me with a paw in the air. I knew that he was the one that took the most hits because he was protecting everyone else. When I bent down to check him out I saw two very visible puncture wounds from Memphis. I was so angry and flustered that I pretty much ignored the owner as I got the dogs together and got out of there.

When we got home Rich and I took Tank to the Emergency Vet where we had to leave him for a few hours so that they could do surgery to insert a drainage tube to keep the bite from getting infected. Poor Roonie was still upset, as was I after being scared to death that the dog was going to get him by the neck.

Thankfully, the surgery went well and we picked him up this afternoon. We let the owners know what happened and they agreed to pay the vet bill which for today only was over $400. The woman was so upset about what happened that she cried every time we talked to her and she told us she is looking for new homes for her dogs. We obviously don't want her to get rid of her dogs, but are thankful that she has been so worried. Tank will have to go back at least two more times to remove the tube and then the sutures. He has been whining and crying all afternoon when he tries to move, but otherwise has been sleeping. I missed out on Landon's party, as well as the cookout, because I wanted to stay home and keep an eye on him.
