Yesterday I had to administer the Reading SOL testing in the morning, which took forever! I thought the day would end up being great because my 8th graders would be testing and my planning period got moved to the end of the day. However, when I returned to my room after testing was over I had half a period left with 6th grade rocket launchers:) During our trips in and out of the room for test launches I started noticing a strange odor.
After twenty minutes of being out of the room, we returned to switch periods. It was then that the strong "electrical burn" or "gas" odor hit us at the door! Luckily, the kids were leaving the room and I didn't have another class coming to me. I quickly looked around to see what could be on fire and when I didn't see anything I called the office to let them know my concern. When no one showed up after a couple of minutes, I called again and then grabbed the teacher next door to check it out. We made the decision to evacuate the entire 6th grade hallway until someone showed up to tell us what to do! Of course all of this is happening when the kids are supposed to be going to lunch and are now stuck outside in 90 degree weather!
Eventually the fire department was called and it took them about 45 minutes for them to give us the "all clear" sign. The smell, however, lingered all afternoon so I couldn't go back in my room and I got stuck doing Field Day duty assignments and didn't have lunch myself until after 2:00 pm. We think the emergency light was going bad and put off the electric burning odor. Anyhow, SOL testing wasn't disrupted thank the Lord, or else the day would have been even worse! As Jennie and I always say, "These things only happen to US!"
