Gone Fishin'

We really enjoyed having the long weekend to relax and get caught up on some housework. Saturday evening, Rich and Evan went to our pond to do a little fishing. First, they stopped by Walmart to get some new lures, promised they'd only spend a few dollars...ummm, yeah right. I guess I can't really complain because when I called to check on them they had "HUGE fish stories" to share. As usual, I thought Rich was making up stories, but as I made my way to the lake to check out their catches I realized I was mistaken.

The story goes as follows. Rich was reeling in a small bass (8 inches or so) when he saw a "monster" following close behind. Instead of pulling the little guy out of the water, Rich jerked the line a bit. The monster bass launched and took the entire little fish and the lure. Somehow the big guy swallowed the little fish without swallowing the hook. Rich now had the monster on his line and reeled him in. As soon as he got the monster on the ground his line broke, so it's a good thing he landed him quickly. For those of you who know our lake, it's not very big and extremely shallow. Last year, Rich and I saw an enormous (for our pond, 2-3 lb),large mouth swimming around, but it would not bite. We're pretty sure the one that he caught Saturday is the same one. There can't be very many of these "big" guys in such a small pong. Upon inspecting the fish before throwing it back, Rich found another hook and line stuck in its throat but decided not to mess with it since he's been living with it for quite some time. The monster happily returned to the water with his belly full!

(Large mouth caught on 9/4/10)

(Proud of his catch!)

(Yes, it is big...but honey, your nubs are pretty small.)
