Wednesday was my first day back to school with the kids. No matter how many years go by it is still the one day of the year when everyone is anxious with anticipation. Every teacher I know gets worked up before the big day, but when it finally comes it usually passes with little excitement because the kids are on their best behavior, most of them scared to death of their first day in middle school. However, there are always one or two children that show their true colors...these are the few that you know will make the year something to remember.
This year was not unlike the previous seven. During the first block of the day I was trying to assign seats, learn names, figure out what it's going to be like with a blind student and two to three of her aids in the room, but little Johnny (name changed to protect his identity) was already trying to get my attention. He strolled in five minutes late, pulled his hood over his head and buried his head in his desk. Sure, he could have been nervous or tired, but I knew better. The shaggy hair and "skater-dude" clothing was the first clue. Then, several interruptions later, he asks me, "What do you get when you cross a Bulldog and a Shitzu?" Hmmm, let me think....Are you kidding me?? Did this kid really just ask me that question during the FIRST thirty minutes on the FIRST day of school?! I don't even want to think about what he will be asking me in JUNE!
